Big Brothers & Their Role in the New Member Indoctrination Program

All potential new members are assigned a Big Brother who is specifically expected to look after the health, welfare and needs of each new member. Sigma Gamma encourages its prospective new members to maintain their academic focus and specifically dedicates significant blocks of time wherein individuals are expected to pursue their academic work.

The relationship between a Big Brother and a Little Brother often lasts longer than the orientation period. It becomes meaningful to them during both undergraduate and graduate years. To ensure this experience is fulfilling to both the Little and Big Brother, the following criteria should adhered to for the Big Brother Program: 
 
Selection Criteria for Big Brothers 
 
Members being considered as a Big Brother should meet the following criteria:
 
• Be in good standing with the chapter 
• Be in good standing, GPA wise and be seen as a leader among his peers
• Serve as a positive role model for his Little Brother 
• Have similar fraternal and personal interests 
• Have the time necessary to spend with Little Brother and attend related activities and meetings 
• Responsible and dependable 
• Possess the ability to motivate and inspire 
• Maintain a positive, outgoing attitude toward the school and Sigma Gamma 
• Ability to counsel and advise Little Brother 
 
Responsibilities of Big Brothers 
 
• Monitor academic performance 
• Assist in the Little Brother’s social adjustment 
• Act as a sounding board when needed and report Little Brother’s progress towards initiation 
• Ensure Little Brother understands and fulfills requirements for initiation (GPA, campus involvement, involvement within Sigma Gamma, etc.) 
• Attend and participate in all activities that require Big Brother attendance 

Responsibilities of Little Brothers 
 
• Meet with his Big Brother at least once a week 
• Discuss any difficulties or problems with his Big Brother 
• Use his Big Brother as a link for fraternal, academic, and social information 
• Expect his Big Brother to perform the responsibilities listed above 

Any prospective new member is encouraged to advise their Big Brother and/or the NMEC of any individual and/or group concerns as relating to activities expected of each potential new member. Sigma Gamma has always respected such concerns and developed individually tailored approaches to resolve such concerns. Sigma Gamma reserves the right to withdraw the membership bid extended to potential new members at any time, with cause.
