Alumni Board

Alumni Board

The Sigma Gamma Alumni Board has evolved over the years. It has historically played a significantly active role in helping the active fraternity with certain recognition related matters, as well as college and community relations endeavors. During the years that the active fraternity owned real estate in Oswego, this group played a major role in raising and administering funds relating to property maintenance and improvement initiatives. Throughout the fraternity’s history, “The Alumni Board” has taken a lead role in planning and executing reunions, and continuing to communicate fraternity related updates to the overall alumni base.

Although the Alumni Board, nor any individual members, bear no responsibility for the consequences of the actions and decisions of the active fraternity, the Alumni Board does focus on taking certain measures to ensure that fraternity traditions are passed down properly. We believe that traditions have provided the parameters of our success and proliferation over our 7 decades.

Because the Sigma Gamma Alumni Board is primarily an advisory body, we are not focused on being an overly formal governing body. It is impossible to be at such a distance. Our meetings are periodic, although we do make sure we have a formal annual meeting in June. A sub – committee of our Alumni Board holds a formal review meeting with the active fraternity to review traditions, compliance with college recognition requirements, insurance matters and other strategic planning.

We have found that over the years, we will have more of an impact when we provide advice and counsel when we put such into context. Times change and with it cultural and social tendencies evolve and adapt. Because we know how much things can change, our alumni board is constantly evaluating the effect of ongoing change with the need to reconcile with traditions and the reasons why our founding fathers adopted the traditions that define our fraternity.

Our Alumni Board does in fact provide substantial, liaison based assistance. Some of our alumni board members use their experience in the insurance industry to provide advice to the current fraternity regarding matters of required insurance and liability coverage. Some of our alumni board members use their professional experience to provide informal advice on potential legal matters, or assist them in promotional related matters. Some of our alumni board members use their passion and knowledge of fraternity traditions to document certain details that assist the fraternity in keeping certain traditions going.

Other alumni board members might use their experience in web development to assist the fraternity in enhancing its social media presence. Some alumni board members use their banking and accounting industry experience to assist the fraternity and alumni in fundraising related initiatives. Other board members devote considerable energy to maintaining the Sigma Gamma alumni contact database for purposes of improving our abilities to communicate with our alumni and keep them up to date on matters involving the fraternity. Certain alumni board members have been asked to be a part of this informal group because they may live in or around Oswego and have ties to the local community that can be leveraged in ways that could potentially benefit the fraternity.

The point is that we have many alumni who “pitch in” and provide helpful resources to the fraternity.

We encourage all alumni who are interested in helping to express their interest. WE GLADLY MAKE ROOM FOR ANY ALUMNI WHO CAN AND WANTS TO STEP UP.  At the current time, as has been stated, the alumni board is not set up as an overly formal organization with set “terms” for service or “election protocols”. Rather, we have seen over the years that those who do want to step up and help, and put the time and energy into participating in meetings and planning conference calls inevitably step up. And there is always room for them.  So, that aside, as of May 2017, here are members of our Alumni Board along with their noted specialties,(and the year they pledged) if applicable:
